The design of a solar system before purchasing and installation requires knowledge of the premises and usage of the system, which inverters would be appropriate, as well as the sizing of the energy storage capacity based on the inverter’s maximum delivery.
The industry standard for the sizing of a LiFePO4 energy storage size is 2:1. For every 1kVA that the inverter can supply, the 2kWh of battery storage capacity should be available.
Why is the appropriate sizing of the total energy storage capacity of the batteries important?
During the initial start-up of a system (such as a washing machine etc.) an extremely high current that is more than the average power consumption is drawn. This current is referred to as the inrush current and can achieve double or more of the average current used within the system. This excess current can result in the BMS switching the battery output off, to protect the cells from a decrease in lifespan or the damaging of a cell in the Lithium battery.
An example of a correctly sized system (which is dependent on what loads would be on the system) is if a 5kVA inverter is being used, 10kWh battery capacity would be required. By sizing the battery capacity appropriately, the batteries would be capable of supplying the inrush current without being damaged or switching off, should the inrush current not exceed the 2:1 ratio of power usage.
How does a REVOV BMS protect the batteries?
The REVOV battery-management-systems (BMS) protects the batteries by monitoring the voltage and the current of the battery pack, as well as the individual cell voltages. Should one of these values not be within an acceptable range, the BMS would switch off the battery’s output to protect the cells.
REVOV recommends a 2:1 for the battery capacity to the maximum inverter output power ratio when designing and installing a solar system. Thus, for every 1kVA that the inverter is specified to provide, 2kWh of battery capacity should be present.
