REVOV offers top-quality 12-volt lithium batteries in South Africa, including cost-effective 2nd LiFe alternatives.
Why insist on lithium iron phosphate batteries?
Not all lithium batteries are the same. A lithium iron phosphate battery is a type of lithium battery that has cathode materials made from lithium iron phosphate.
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are known to be the most reliable, stable and safest lithium battery. They’re non-toxic, last longer and, over time, cost less than most alternatives.
These are some of the many advantages of a LiFePO4 battery compared to other popular batteries, including other lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries.
Long cycle life
The cycle life of a LiFePO4 battery is more than four times that of other lithium-ion batteries. LiFePO4 batteries can reach up to 5,000 cycles and more with only small drops in capacity in comparison to similar-cost alternatives.
They also last much longer between chargescompared to lead-acid batteries and lose little to no charge when not in use.
When used properly each day, a typical LiFePO4 battery can be discharged past 80% or more of its rated capacity. This can be seen in the manufacturer’s notes relating to the battery.
Generally, lead-acid batteries have a maximum daily depth of discharge (DoD) of around 50%.
REVOV 12V LiFePO4 batteries can be safely discharged to 80% of their rated capacity, for example in backup situations. You don’t ever have to worry about over discharging your LiFePO4 batteries.
Exceptional lifespan
You can use a quality LiFePO4 battery for many years longer than other lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries. The average lifespan of a lead-acid battery is just two years, with significant degradation towards the end of this time.
Even REVOV’s 2nd LiFe 12V batteries, which have served as electric vehicle batteries prior to being repurposed as stationary energy storage systems, come with a warranty of 3 years (or 2,000 cycles at one cycle per day, whichever comes first).
Safety first
One of the most important advantages LiFePO4 batteries have over other battery types is their safety.
LiFePO4 batteries are the safest lithium battery type because of their thermal and structural stability. Lead-acid – and most other battery types – don’t have this stability at the same level.
A LiFePO4 battery can withstand relatively high temperatures without decomposing and will not generate significant heat on its own during normal functioning.
Environmentally friendly>
LiFePO4 batteries are rechargeable, but their eco-friendliness doesn’t stop there. Unlike lead-acid and nickel-oxide lithium batteries, they don’t contain toxic, heavy or rare earth metals like cobalt, nickel or lead.
LiFePO4 batteries are composed of common materials like graphite, iron and copper, which are more abundant, cheaper to source and require less energy to mine and process.
Lithium-ion batteries have no fuel to refill or dangerous acid to replace. Unlike generators, they don’t emit fumes during normal functioning. Almost all LFP batteries come with a built-in battery management system (BMS), which controls the battery and stops charge and discharge during abnormal conditions.
Efficient performance
LiFePO4 batteries outperform other types of battery in more ways, including:
-
- charge rate: a LiFePO4 battery will reach full charge in two hours or less.
- self-discharge rate when not in use: only 2% per month, compared to 30% for lead-acid batteries.
- consistent power: a LiFePO4 battery can discharge the same amount of power regardless of its stage of charge.
Zero maintenance
Lithium iron phosphate batteries require no maintenance, which makes them easier and safer to use.
They can be stored for longer than lead-acid batteries because of their low self-discharge rate, meaning they lose very little power when idle.
Small and lightweight
LiFePO4 batteries weigh up to 70% less than lead-acid batteries.
They’re also compact, so they’re easier to transport and house, and are suitable for wall mounting.
REVOV’s LiFePO4 batteries provide greater energy density at half the mass or less of lead-acid batteries.
Better long-term value
Lead-acid batteries may appear better value initially, but they end up costing more in the long run because they need regular maintenance and replacing more often.
A LiFePO4 battery needs no upkeep and lasts as much as two to four times longer than a lead acid battery.
Temperature resilience
Lithium iron phosphate batteries can withstand a wide range of temperatures. Because of their temperature resilience, they’re suitable for use in a range of environmental conditions.
REVOV batteries can charge at temperatures from 0 to 45°C. They can discharge at temperatures from -0 – 45°C.

Some uses of 12-volt lithium batteries in South Africa
LiFePO4 batteries, such as REVOV’s 12-volt lithium batteries, can be used in a wide variety of applications, such as:
Solar power storage: a 12-volt lithium battery is ideal for storing the energy harnessed from the sun in solar setups.
UPS for loadshedding: these batteries are ideal for UPS (uninterruptible power supply) systems that keep some devices, such as Wi-Fi, running when the power is interrupted.
Back-up batteries for security systems, gates and garage doors: a LiFePO4 lithium battery is ideal as a backup battery to ensure essential security and entry points are always working.
Batteries for camping, boating and recreational use: a LiFePO4 lithium battery is more weight effective per stored unit of energy, making it ideal for camping, caravans, motorhomes, boats and other recreational uses.
